SUSAN ELMBLAD RUBIN
Contemporary Botanical Art

I like plants...all of them. They clean the air, feed our families, bring us joy, and soften the edges of a hard world.
I am drawn to the recurring patterns and wild anomalies that occur within the botanical realm.

I specialize in drawing, in both graphite and colored pencil, and I am interested in the idea that botanical art and
illustration is a dynamic and evolving art genre. As a teacher of botanical art and illustration at the Denver Botanic
Gardens Certificate Program, I try to convey an appreciation for both the scientific and artistic aspects
of the discipline. As an exhibiting artist, I push the boundaries of traditional botanical art with less conventional
media, scale, and composition. My work appears at SPARK Gallery Denver, in numerous exhibits and publications,
and is held in many private collections. I always try to look beyond the obvious and to present a fresh view of the
flora that surround and sustain us.
